Overview

  • Thunderstorms associated with a mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) tracked across portions of northern Illinois during the afternoon of June 16th, producing scattered wind damage.
  • These storms weakened as they approached the Chicago metro, but an aggregate outflow boundary produced by these storms continued to surge eastward, producing strong winds that caused additional instances of wind damage in the Chicago metro despite very little accompanying rain and lightning. Blowing dust was also reported in the strong winds behind the outflow boundary.
  • The most significant damage occurred on the far west side of Rockford, where a microburst caused a gas station canopy to collapseand produced a concentrated area of tree and power line damage.

Meteorological Glossary:

  • Mesoscale convective vortex (MCV): A compact low pressure center that forms within large thunderstorm complexes. The winds around this low pressure center take on a swirl-like or vortex-like pattern and are oriented in a counterclockwise direction.MCVs can persist long after their parent storm complex has decayed, and can often go on to generate new thunderstorms several hours after this has happened. They are notoriously difficult to forecast as models often struggle to resolve to them and how they will evolve with time.
  • Outflow boundary: The leading edge of rain-cooled air that rushesout ahead of a thunderstorm after it produces a downdraft. This boundary is also known as a gust front. When an outflow boundary passes through, it usually produces a gusty wind shift and a drop in temperatures. In some cases, the winds behind an outflow boundary can be strong enough to produce damage, sometimes well before the associatedstorm arrives.
  • Microburst: A localized column of sinking air, or a downdraft, within a thunderstorm that spreads out and produces strong winds in various directions once it hits the ground. Microbursts often reach the ground with enough force to produce a concentrated area of wind damage, which can oftentimes be similar to what an EF-0 or EF-1 tornado can produce.
