Who Is eligible to apply for the NYPD Lieutenant Exam?
The NYPD Lieutenant Exam is open to employees of the department given that on the first date of the test, the employee holds a permanent competitive appointment or appears on the Preferred List for the title of Sergeant Police. Similar to Sergeant rank promotion, passing the exam is only one of the requirements to become a Lieutenant. Only those Sergeants with at least two (2) years of service in New York City Police, Transit Police, or Housing Authority Police Departments will be considered. Additional points are given to those who have gained Seniority and Department Awards or Veterans’ Preference Credit. Take note that points for these merits will only be added to the scores of the exam passers. If the applicant has a period of a break in service, additional points from the merits will not be added.

- The application for the NYPD Lieutenant Exam is via the Online Application System (OASys). Instructions for electronic submissions and payment will be shown onscreen. A valid email address is required for this online application. Former exam takers who have a registered email via the OASys will no longer be required to verify their email address. Only those new to the OASys will be required to verify their email via the confirmation notice they will receive.
- Take note that any account creation issues in OASys take two (2) business days to be resolved, so applicants must consider this during the application period deadline.
- Acceptable payment methods include the use of all major credit cards, bank cards linked to a bank account, or prepaid debit cards bearing a credit card logo. Examination fees may be waived for those receiving or providing certain forms of public assistance or public welfare programs. Updated fee waiver application forms and requirements may be viewed via the OASys.
- Upon successful submission and payment, the Admission Notice will be shown on the applicant’s OASys Dashboard.

- The NYPD Lieutenant Exam is also taken at a designated computer terminal and administered by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services or DCAS.
- Given the competitive nature of the exam, electronic devices are prohibited to be used inside the test site. These devices include but are not limited to, mobile phones, smart watches, recording devices, and the like. Simple calculators that can do basic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division are allowed but must be presented for inspection upon entry.
- Remember to finish the test before the exit fingerprinting process; otherwise, the test score will be nullified and the application fee will not be refunded.
- A valid ID with a signature and photo is also required to enter the test site.
