Lu Yang (b.1984) is a Shanghai-based artist who creates work exploring themes and formats that combine traditional Chinese medicine and spirituality together with contemporary digital cultures. Through the medium of video, installation and performance, Lu Yang explore the fluidity of gender representation through 3D animated works inspired by Japanese manga and gaming subcultures. With a fascination with the human body and neurology, Lu Yang’s work bridges the scientific and the technological with aesthetics drawn from popular youth culture creating new visions of China in the face of modernity. Lu Yang graduated with a BA and MA from the New Media Art department of the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou. She often collaborates with performers, designers, illustrators and composers. Her work has been featured in exhibitions internationally including solo exhibitions, Electromagnetic Brainology, Spiral, Tokyo, Japan; Lu Yang: Encephalon Heaven, M WOODS, Beijing, 2017; Delusional Mandala, abc gallery night, Société, Berlin, 2016; Delusional Mandala, Beijing Commune, 2016; and KIMO KAWA CANCER BABY, Rén Space, Shanghai, 2014. Enter the disorientating and darkly humorous worlds created by multimedia artist LuYang (b. 1984, Shanghai) for their first UK solo exhibition. Immersed in the cultures of anime, videogames and sci-fi, LuYang combines Buddhism, neuroscience and digital technology to investigate the mysteries and mechanics of the human body and mind.
The title LuYang NetiNeti incorporates the Sanskrit expression ‘neti neti’, meaning ‘neither this, nor that’. The Main Hall focuses on the artist’s own avatar, DOKU, created using CGI animation and by motion-tracking the movements of dancers. The six versions of DOKU that exist to date correspond to the six paths of Buddhist reincarnation: Hell, Heaven, Hungry Ghost, Animal, Asura and Human.
DOKU – Binary conflicts invert illusions is a new video commissioned by Zabludowicz Collection. It features the characters Heaven and Hell engaged in a dance on a yin yang symbol, leading to the formation of a new hybrid DOKU character, the binary god. Presented on a large screen on the altar, DOKU the Self follows a version of LuYang on a passenger aeroplane moving through numerous states of perception. The narrator contemplates the concepts of reincarnation, consciousness, and our understanding of ‘the self’.

It is quite unbelievable to me that I have seemed to grow up in a millennium like I learned about so many tragedies in human history from books. In my subconscious, I expected something like this pandemic would happen one day. It seems that the decadent and the nihility is doomed to happen. My encounter and loss are acceptable, and I don’t want to complain. The tribulations of the deceased and medical staff are the most heartbreaking to me since they died for others in this counterattack of nature. My profession seems useless during this worldwide pandemic. I participate in some donations and charity sales, but these only can make me feel better. I hope I provide more help to others in my future career and do something for the world. I know it is hard, but I will do it within my ability.
