Kitchen Cops uncover rotten, brown, mushy broccoli in Huntsville Japanese restaurant (2024)

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Some pretty high-profile spots are on the Kitchen Cops’ radar this week.

Madison County

The Chevron at Winchester and Naugher in Riverton have the lowest score this week with a 70. There was a broken septic tank lid, along with 8 dented cans in the pantry that needed to be thrown away. There were also multiple food temperature problems with raw and cooked foods, no sanitizer in the building for dishwashing and a dirty ice machine.

A half mile up the road, Fuji Japanese checks in with a 72. Inspectors found a box of rotten, brown and mushy broccoli that had to be tossed out. There were also two significant problems with the dishwasher. It couldn’t heat water any more than 87 degrees, and its sanitizer dispenser wasn’t working. There was also no soap or paper towels at the sink, and chicken, shrimp and butter at the wrong temperature.

The Cracker Barrel at Drake and the Parkway gets a 74. That’s 6 points lower than its score in January. Cracker Barrel also had issues with no sanitizer in its dishwasher, along with missing time stamps for various foods and turkey at the wrong temperature.

Chuy’s at Bob Wallace and the Parkway gets an 82. The Kitchen Cops found dirty plates and bowls stored with clean ones. There was also residue in the ice chutes and multiple food temperature violations.

Denny’s on University Drive had chemicals stored next to clean plates on a shelf, along with issues with employee paperwork. It gets an 84.

Sonic at Hobbs and the Parkway also has an 84 due to black build-up inside the ice machine.

DeKalb County

The Blue Jug on Gault Avenue gets an 85 due to un-dated sauce and hummus for sale and two-week-old beef gravy and soup in the kitchen.

Marshall County

Taqueria y Restaurante Mi Princesa in Boaz has a 69. There was food residue on a meat slider, broken fryer baskets, unlabeled soap and beef from an unapproved source. The inspection also showed that there was no toilet paper in the women’s restroom and rice and shrimp at the wrong temperature.

The Sprint Mart on Horton Road in Albertville got a 76 on its most recent check-in. There was an unlabeled chemical bottle and a dirty can opener in the kitchen. There was also an issue with employees not having proper health reporting paperwork.

Little Caesar’s in Arab has a 77 because of multiple food temperature problems and no paper towels in the restroom.

The Waffle House on Highway 75 in Albertville is also on the list this week. It lost points for food residue on a supposedly clean pan, a dishwasher not achieving a proper temperature and eggs sitting out without time control markings. Its final score is a 78.

The Subway on Brindlee Mountain Parkway and Cullman Road in Arab also has a 78. It had multiple food temperature problems.

Another 78 goes to Chico’s Taqueria in Albertville for using incorrect cooling methods for food. There were a few foods at the wrong temperature in the cooler. It doesn’t help that their food thermometer wasn’t working either.

Jessy Tacos & Tortas in Guntersville has an 80. Inspectors found two-week-old tamales and an unlabeled chemical bottle.

Mar Y Tierra in Guntersville has an 81 due to multiple food temperature issues. The ice machine was also dirty and there was no handwashing sink in the cooking area due to an ongoing plumbing repair.

New China on Highway 431 in Guntersville also had an 81. Inspectors saw employees using gloves for several different tasks, leading to the possibility of cross-contamination. There were also chemicals stored above food items and rice at the wrong temperature.

Panda III in Arab also received an 81 this week. It had unlabeled chemicals and chicken at the wrong temperature.

Big Spring Lake Golf in Albertville had residue in its ice maker and no hot water in the restroom. It gets an 82.

Morgan County

The Flint Wavaho on Highway 31 south of Decatur has a 72 this week. The Kitchen Cops found a dirty ice machine, insect poison in the kitchen and unlabeled bottles. There was also no food thermometer to be found on site.

Popeyes on the Beltline is given an 82 because of a dirty ice machine and dirty soda nozzles. There was also no hot water in either restroom.

Francesco’s on 6th Avenue had food temperature issues and unlabeled spray bottles in the kitchen. Its score this week is 83.

And the 609 Market on Bank Street in Decatur gets an 84 after inspectors wrote them up for improperly stored chemicals and no hand-drying towels at two sinks.
